Microsoft October 2026 Patch Tuesday: Record Fixes and End of Updates for Some Windows Editions

On 13 October 2026 BleepingComputer published its coverage of Microsoft's monthly security updates. By the site's count the company fixed 1,411 flaws, which it describes as a record, not counting 348 flaws fixed earlier in the month in services such as Azure and Exchange Server. Of these, 70 are rated critical, including 57 remote code execution flaws. The site links the large number to Microsoft's continued use of AI platforms to find and fix vulnerabilities.

The report highlights three zero-days. CVE-2026-96951 is a Windows Shell security feature bypass that sidesteps Mark of the Web protection and is actively exploited. CVE-2026-108398 is a .NET Framework flaw that can let attackers run unauthorised applications and bypass Windows Defender Application Control; it was discovered by James Forshaw of Google Project Zero and is publicly disclosed. CVE-2026-92707 is a denial-of-service flaw in MessagePack-CSharp.

Of particular interest to organisations: Microsoft said the October 2026 update is the last for Windows 11 version 24H2 (Home and Pro) and Windows 10 Enterprise LTSB 2016, and that Windows 11 23H2 (Enterprise, Education and IoT Enterprise) will stop receiving security updates next month. Microsoft also introduced experimental "risk cohorts" to group related flaws, stressing they do not replace its usual patching guidance.

The report adds that other vendors, including Fortinet, Citrix, Ivanti, SAP, SonicWall and Atlassian, released fixes the same month.

What does this mean for your business?
Two practical points. First, know which Windows versions run on your company's machines: a device on an unsupported version is exposed to every new flaw with no one to fix it, so plan upgrades before support ends, not after. Second, do not postpone monthly updates for internet-connected systems, especially when a flaw is reported as actively exploited. A fixed monthly update window with a quick test on one machine before wider rollout is enough for most small and medium businesses.
